When it comes to the health benefits of tea, green varieties get all the attention. But, your cup of good old English Tea also provides significant health benefits.
Usually black, authentic English Teas, or brands made in England, are the world's most popular type. Recent research has provided evidence of black tea's health benefits.
First, consumption could help those having treatment for obesity. A study from Kobe University in Japan may help those struggling with weight issues. The study showed that it can reduce weight gains and limit the negative consequences of high fat foods. The study examined a group of mice. One group was given a normal diet and the other a diet high in fat. During this time, the mice consumed water as well as tea. At the end of the study, evidence showed that the mice that consumed tea has reduced weight gain as compared to the group that drank only water.
A new Dutch study shows that it can help protect against heart disease. Results of a 40,000 people study over 13 years indicates that having several cups a day can protect against heart disease. The risk of heart disease was cut by 1/3 for drinkers who had 6 or more cups of tea per day.
Another new study of black varieties shows it can help you recover from stress more quickly. Researchers found that black tea cut levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in the blood. Consumption reduces stress levels quicker than drinking other beverages. Possible reasons for it helping to reduce stress levels include the ingredients in tea such as catechins, polyphenols, flavonoids, and amino acids. The study was conducted by University College in London.
A few English brands are the most familiar and available in most countries across the globe, including PG Tips, Taylors of Harrogate and Typhoo.
PG Tips is England's number 1 brand and arguably the world's best-selling and most familiar English Tea. It was started in 1869 by Arthur Brooke in Manchester, England. Describing his tea, Brooke's famous early slogan was "Good tea unites good company, exhilarates the spirits, opens the heart, banishes restraint from conversation and promote happiest purposes of social intercourse."
Taylors of Harrogate is a small company and synonymous with English Tea. Taylors is one of England's last independent family tea businesses. It was founded in 1886 by Charles Taylor. Taylors also produces Yorkshire Gold, which won an award as the nations best.
Coming in round bags and packed in the distinctive red box, Typhoo is one of the world's distinctive English brands. It began in 1903 in Birmingham, England, with grocer John Sumner. He started a tea company to aid his sick sister who suffered from indigestion. Typhoo was the first to be sold as a brand name rather than just as plain loose variety. Actually, it was first called Typhoo Tipps, for the top leaves of the plant. A printing mistake accounts for the incorrect spelling but the name was kept for several years.
As always, make sure to talk to your doctor if you have specific questions about your health.
