Preserve Memories By Creating A Time Capsule

This summer, consider putting together a time capsule with your kids. At the start of summer, choose a container and decorate it with them. Then over the course of the summer, tuck away mementos of their childhood fun inside.

Choosing the right container is important. Make sure it is air- and water-tight. It should also be sturdy enough to stay intact while in storage.

Next, choose how long to keep the container sealed. The point of a time capsule is to capture moments in time so that you can look at them again in the future. The longer you wait, the neater it is to open the capsule. Younger children may have a problem with this, and want to open the capsule right away.

It is easiest to put the capsule somewhere out of the children's reach, or to hide it from them. The capsule should be stored in this secure location for a period of years. Generally 5-10 years is a good timeframe.

Explain the process to the children at the start of the summer. You can sit down with them and come up with ideas of mementos to tuck inside, such as:

Drawings and artwork, crafts, small toys, awards, letters, pebbles, essentially any small and durable item can be included. You will want to enclose photographs in photo-safe envelopes before putting them in the capsule, though, to keep them safe. If you use other media to record memories, such as DVDs or other tapes, you need to consider how long you are storing the capsule. Technology can become obsolete, especially if you are storing the capsule for ten years or more.

Once you have chosen a location for storage, and decided how long to store the capsule, consider how to leave yourself reminders. You don't want to forget where you have left the capsule, especially if you will be storing it for multiple years. You also don't want to move and inadvertently leave it behind.

Don't fill your capsule with news of the day taken from newspapers and magazines. You can always get reprints of old news. The capsule is designed to be personal and to bring back memories of family times together - choose items that remind you of times your family has had.
