In the 1950's, sock hops were the most common dances. They were most popular for high school kids, even though people of all ages enjoyed them. This type of dance helped people to better enjoy music and dancing.
While these dances were a favorite social event in the 50's, times have changed since then. The gap between generations seems to grow with each new piece of technology. It is hard for teenagers today to see how they relate to teenagers of the 50's.
While it may not be easy to see, there are a lot of things that the teenagers of today owe to the original sock hop teenagers. And there are many ways in which they are similar to one another. The connections are there, you just have to look in order to see them.
When you start making these connections, it becomes easier to plan the perfect modern sock hop. High school kids in the 50's enjoyed music, food and being social, much like modern high school kids. And because these things were the main ingredients of sock hops, with a few alterations, these dances can be easily altered to work for teenagers now.
In the 50's, rock and roll was the most popular type of music. And it is still a popular type of music today. But today's rock and roll is almost as different from 50's rock and roll, as today's teenagers are from 50's teenagers.
That doesn't mean that you can't play songs by the Beatles or Elvis, though. However, playing modern songs that are more popular among today's youth would also be a good idea. Just make sure that the modern songs that you add have 50's feel to them in order to go with the dance's theme.
Another similarity between these two generations of teenagers is their love for pop and ice cream, making those items the perfect choice for sock hop refreshments. Make sure that you get a large enough variety of soda that you can host a taste-testing contest at the dance. You could also set up an ice cream sundae station and allow students to create their own ice cream treats using different toppings such as caramel, peanuts, cookies and cherries.
While some things might need to be changed in order for today's teenagers to enjoy these dances, the changes are minor. For example, just by making it a dance where students can have dates, rather than having it be a non-date event like in the 50's, modern teenagers will enjoy it more. The gap between generations might seem large, but sock hops can be just as enjoyable for today's teenagers as they were for teenagers in the 50's.
