Odd-Ball Holidays: A Different Way to Market Your Product
It's the holiday season once again. While most of your competitors are bumping up their marketing, you should find a smarter way to get noticed. My office provides owner builder construction loans - a small fish in a large construction financing ocean. The only chance we have of getting noticed is by being different and wacky - focusing on odd-ball holidays to send out our marketing pieces.
Never heard of owner builder construction loans? That's okay, because owner builder loans are a very small niche within the construction financing industry. Basically, they are loans for people who want to build their homes without using a general contractor.
But, that's not really the point. The key is that our office works in a small niche in a large industry. In order to be recognized and get the word our there about our services, we never shy away from an opportunity to do something a bit off the wall, if not down-right crazy.
With the holiday season upon us, it's a perfect time to think about your marketing strategy for next year. One of the simplest ways to be different from all of your competitors is to celebrate odd-ball holidays with your customers and potential customers.
As far as marketing is concerned, you can keep Christmas and Hanukah. Personally, I love National Pancake Day, National Jelly Bean Day, National Yo-Yo Day and many other weird-o holidays that no one else even knows exist.
Why? Because no one else even knows they exist.
And that gives me a simple, inexpensive opportunity to stand out. I use these holidays as excuses to reach out to past owner builder clients, new leads, and even referral sources.
Imagine your customers' reactions when they get some random, off-the-wall mail piece with Jelly Beans for National Jelly Bean Day. It's guaranteed to be more memorable than a Happy Holidays card around Christmas time. The costs are low, as far as mailings are concerned.
And, if you put a small item in your mail piece, the postage won't go up. But, the customer will be much more prone to open it. In other words, if the customer receives a letter from you, having a small bit of bulkiness to the mailing will drastically increase your opening rates. It doesn't matter if the bulky item is a jelly bean, a guitar pick, or a plastic army figure. All that matters is that the bulky mail will get opened a lot more regularly than a boring, regular, flat envelope.
And, once the mail piece gets opened, the different, random, wacky holiday will help get your message read and remembered! It's a direct marketing strategy that doesn't just apply to owner builder construction loans. It will work for any niche.
For example, did you know that the third weekend in May is the annual Calaveras County Jumpin' Frog festival and competition? The same one Mark Twain wrote about in 1865? Try sending your customers their very own frog to enter (no, not a real one - a cheap plastic one), along with a re-print of Twain's poem and a somewhat interesting letter. It's unique, it gets opened, and it puts a smile on their face.
In our case, this example costs our small, owner builder office all of sixty-four cents, including postage, to do all of that!
Don't have any money at all for marketing? Can't afford to send cheap mailings? These odd-ball holidays are still a great excuse to send an email to your clients. It's an excuse to keep in touch with your clients, and it will still be so different from your boring competitors that you'll be remembered. For instance, our owner builder clients like to keep abreast of the latest happening in the construction and mortgage industry - these odd-ball holidays are the perfect excuse to send them email updates that are interesting and memorable.
Everyone knows that October 31 is Halloween, but good marketers are not like everyone else. Who cares about Halloween when we know that October 4th is "National Golf Day" and October 25th is "World Pasta Day." I'll bet anyone reading this can come up with some fun and inexpensive theme cards to send for one of these days.
Go online and find a sampling of oddball holidays you can use to stay in touch and set yourself apart from your competition. Imagine what you can do all year round. Be creative. Do not be afraid to take a chance on being a madcap marketer!

Jeffery Nemeroff- Born in Chicago, Jeffrey Nemeroff was raised near Los Angeles where he studied both fine art and design. After obtaining a BFA, he continued an education in painting at Otis College of Art & Design and began exhibiting his work. Nemeroff also enjoyed a successful career as a creative director at Architectural Digest magazine. He was fortunate to have worked with the world's top photographers, interior designers and architects.
Sophia Lee- Born in Taiwan, Sophia studied fashion design, and then painting and design, at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. Upon graduation, she moved to New York where and spent several years designing book covers for St. Martin's Press. "For me, making art is like meditating through the brush. I put down the first line and follow it as a thought, watching it grow organically. Through an exploration of the natural environment, I try to capture and reveal their inner beauty of found objects with my calligraphic-style paint strokes."
Meher Kavarava Siegle- Meher draws upon her inner life. The works are bright and imaginative, often leading viewers to wonder about the back story. The artist's own story includes a childhood in postcolonial Bombay, India, surrounded by vibrant colors, gorgeous fabrics and teeming crowds. She has BAs in Philosophy and Photography. Painting in encaustics, Meher is influenced by the mythology, colors and designs of her native India as they emerge from her psyche as if from a dream.
Rachel Murray Meyer- Rachel was always making art and objects as a child and it is this kind of activity-creating objects and experimental environments- that still comes naturally to her. She has a BS in math from Smith, and has a MS in Industrial Engineering. Inspired to use images in a variety of ways, her most recent series are transparent layers combining her photographs, engravings from the 1800's, and gold or silver painted prayer paper.

In ancient civilizations all throughout the Americas, the healers often used chocolate as a remedy and to address various health issues. But is has only been in the last few years that anyone in the Western world acknowledged that chocolates could provide any kind of health benefit. The other major myth about eating chocolates sweets is that it contributes to tooth decay. However, this myth has also been debunked and the Eastman Dental Center. The center conducted research which showed that the commonly known cacao concoctions actually contain some very beneficial phosphates, as well as other minerals. These elements serve to minimize the effects of the sugar that is an ingredient.
As a result of these findings, the researchers concluded that chocolates are the least likely treats or desserts, such as chocolate cake, to end up causing tooth decay and fostering cavities. In a separate study conducted at the Osaka University in Japan, researchers discovered that there are also several antibacterial properties in the cacao that were very effective at counteracting tooth decay. Of course, proper dental hygiene and brushing regularly is a must.
It seems that dark chocolate is an especially rich source of beneficial antioxidants, which can help to counteract the effects of free radicals in the body. On top of that, cacao also has numerous phytochemicals and flavanoids, both of which have a range of healthful benefits. Overall, these reports should help to make people feel even better about buying gifts of chocolate, such as truffles, for the favorite people on their Christmas list.

I have been closely involved in the Italian footwear industry since the early 1970's and I have an in-depth knowledge of how the Italian shoe industry functions. British companies established the principles of good robust leather footwear and to this day are still famous for making shoes giving lasting wear and comfort. On the other hand the Italians coming from an artisan methodology made delicate elegant shoes which the are world renouned as some of the best shoes to own. Technology has allowed many innovative improvements to be incorporated into modern footwear, often these are hidden from the naked eye, but the most significant change has been the use of lighter weight materials with longer wearing properties. Latex anatomic footbeds, padding and more flexible rubber soles that maintain their powers of recovery after hundreds of thousands of compressions and flexes enable modern footwear to perform to a high standard.
In the past when purchasing men's shoes, the heavier the shoe, the better it was perceived to be. Soling leather was sold by weight, so the heavier the shoes were, the higher the price and quality associated with them by the general public. Once the training shoe revolution took hold, customers demanded lighter weight footwear for everyday use that were stylish, yet easy on the foot, without any need to break them in, or feeling uncomfortable for the outset.
In my opinion, the use of some synthetic non-breathable linings used in cheap modern shoes has been very detrimental to the general wellbeing of people's feet. The dynamics of the human foot in motion are complex and good breathability through the lining is essential. Therefore a quality leather lining is not easily bettered for its ability to cope in conditions of high perspiration. For that reason many high grade manufactures recommend having two pairs of shoes and by alternating between them on a daily basis to allow them to recover, breath and dry, fresh to wear once more on an alternate day basis.
To my dismay, a lot of shoes sold today are 'reverse engineered' to meet a perceived retail ticket, the price is often decided by a universal 'bench mark' price laid down by one big retailer. The rest of the high street competition are obliged to go head to head with this big competitor at that price level. As a consequence the buying departments of smaller retailers strive to offer the same price level.The only way to achieve this is by squeezing the purchase price to achieve the desired retail price they believe the general public is willing to pay. The rest of their overheads are fixed and very high.
As a result, factories have to compromise on quality by substituting some these 'hidden' extras incorporated into the shoes with inferior materials, yet still retain the original visual appeal of the shoes. For example, a trained eye can discern between a long rear counter (stiffener) and a cheaper shorter one inserted between the upper and the lining. When new, they look the same, wear it a few months and it will be much more obvious that the shoe with the longer stiffener retains its shape much better! The same happens if inferior latex padding is used; it soon loses its elasticity and performance. In fact it is quite easy to have two pairs of apparently identical new shoes and yet be vastly different in terms of quality for only a small price differential.
Many high street retailers have high overheads, so again the only thing under their control is the purchase price, therefore the average 'mark- up' has increased over recent years and it is not uncommon to see a retail price 'mark-up' four or five times the original purchase price from the factory. Can you buy value for money? Well it isn't as easy as it once was, given the reasons already mentioned as to the difference in quality of similar shoes. Another factor to consider is the reduction in choice, which has become a significant problem as many traditional footwear retailers have closed down.
There is an alternative, as one door closes another one opens, so the saying goes, and the growth of e-commerce and online retailing has allowed specialist online stores to reverse this trend by going more choice and better value for money. Naturally, buying shoes online may seem like an odd thing to do. Not obvious. However, you have all your normal consumer protection rights and reputable companies with specialist brands are able to sell their product direct to the public with a significant price advantage over high street retailers.
By buying online from a reputable seller in particular ones which specialise in Italian shoes, you can be sure to receive some of the best value for money footwear available. Plus if they come directly from an Italian factory source, they make the shoe as they would like to, without price constraints and selling via the internet, overheads are kept to a minimum and that saving is passed onto the customer. Thus it is well worth looking at what is on offer via the internet compared to the High Street retailers.

Now you've got your plan, here's where you save time, all whilst eating extremely well during the week.
